The Metropolitan Museum of Art (often referred as the Met) is a huge museum in Uptown Manhattan located east of Central Park. The museum opened in 1872 and today home to one of the world’s largest art collections totaling more than two million gathered from around the world. For the serious art lovers, a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art would take at least two full days and it is easy to get lost in this museum! ![]() American exhibits include collection of decorative art, sculptures, and paintings. A famous American painting is “George Washington Crossing the Delaware” painted by Emanuel Leutze in 1851. Other exhibits include collections from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Europe. There are also collections from ancient Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome as well as exhibits of Islamic art. Among the popular exhibits are the “Arms and Armour” with its collections from the European medieval period and ancient dynasties of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Japan. ![]() An extension of the Metropolitan Art Museum is The Cloisters, located in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan and overlooking the Hudson River. This is a smaller museum focusing on European works of art from the medieval period.
