Just a block away from New York City’s Theater District is the Diamond District at 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The Diamond District is one of the global centers for diamonds with 90% of the diamonds entering the United States passing through New York City. There are more than 2,600 independent businesses in the Diamond District involved in the diamond and fine jewelry trade. Diamonds sold here cost much less than outside the district and can be as much as half the price.

Entering the Diamond District, you will find numerous jewelry stores but most of the shopping for jewelry are at the booths in the jewelry exchanges. There are altogether 25 exchanges and each exchange has more than 100 booths trading in jewelry. Diamond jewelries found at the exchanges include rings, bands, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and pendants. Non-diamond jewelries include platinum, gold, silver, and pearl. Some establishments also offer loose stones and jewellery designed in the style of the customer’s choice.

Besides the prices, shoppers come to the Diamond District because of the wide range of jewelry found here. Generally better deals can be found from the booths at the jewelry exchanges than at the stores in the Diamond District. Expect to haggle hard and visit other booths to compare choices and prices. Be prepared that some jewelers are aggressive to make a sale and sometimes rude. However, shoppers are not deterred since the best deals for jewelry are in the Diamond District.
